Land Transportation Office (LTO) Chief Assistant Secretary Vigor D. Mendoza II has ordered an investigation into a road rage incident in Antipolo City, where an SUV driver fired a gun at motorcycle riders following a physical altercation.
The shooting, which was caught on video and circulated online, resulted in injuries to at least three individuals. Reports indicate that the SUV driver, a 28-year-old businessman from Quezon City, also accidentally shot his own companion. Authorities are now preparing a case of multiple frustrated homicide against him.
Mendoza expressed deep concern over the violent confrontation, emphasizing the importance of self-control in such situations.
“Nakakalungkot ang ganitong pangyayari na hindi na natin binibigyan ng dignidad ang ating mga sarili, na talo pa natin ang mga bata na magsusuntukan agad sa gitna ng kalsada dahil sa bagay na puwede namang pag-pasensyahan,” he said.
Investigation and Legal Actions
Initial reports suggest that the SUV driver was involved in a fistfight with at least two motorcycle riders before the shooting occurred. Mendoza has directed the LTO-Intelligence and Investigation Division (LTO-IID) to conduct a thorough probe into the incident to determine the cause of the altercation and assess appropriate legal actions, including the possible revocation of the suspect’s driver’s license.
“Muli ay nagpapaalala tayo sa ating mga kababayang motorista na maging maingat, maging responsable, at magbaon ng napakaraming pasensya kapag nasa kalsada,” Mendoza warned. “Marami na tayong naparusahan dahil sa road rage at marami na ang nasira ang buhay dahil sa road rage.”
In response to the incident, LTO-IID head Renante Melitante has issued a show cause order (SCO) against the SUV driver and three motorcycle riders involved. The driver’s licenses of the SUV driver and one of the motorcycle riders have been suspended for 90 days, pending the results of the investigation. The SUV and motorcycle have also been placed under alarm.
The LTO continues to monitor the case and warns that strict penalties will be imposed on those found guilty of reckless and violent behavior while driving.
How to Handle Road Rage Situations
To prevent similar incidents, motorists are encouraged to follow these tips when encountering aggressive drivers or tense situations on the road:
- Stay calm and avoid confrontation. Engaging in arguments or aggressive behavior can escalate the situation.
- Do not retaliate. Avoid honking excessively, making rude gestures, or blocking another vehicle’s path.
- Keep a safe distance. If another driver is acting aggressively, slow down or change lanes to avoid further interaction.
- Report dangerous behavior. If you witness reckless driving or violent behavior, contact the authorities instead of intervening.
- Prioritize safety. Remember that no dispute is worth risking your life or the lives of others.
