How To Get Your Driver’s License: A Step-by-Step Guide

So, you’ve finally hit that stage where you need a driver’s license. Congrats! Nothing screams “I got my life together” more than legally being allowed to drive. But let’s face it. Figuring out how to get started can be so confusing. That’s why we’ve laid it out for you in simple steps, minus the complicated jargon.

First Things First: Know Your License Types

Before we get into the steps, you need to first understand the three kinds of driver’s licenses in the Philippines:

  • Student Permit – This is your starting point. It lets you practice driving as long as you’re accompanied by someone with a valid license. You must hold this for at least 1 month before you can apply for a Non-Professional License.
  • Non-Professional License – This license is for private or personal use. It’s the usual next step after the student permit and allows you to drive cars and motorcycles that are not used for paid services. You can apply for this after 1 month of holding your Student Permit.
  • Professional License – If you plan to drive for work (like delivery drivers, jeepney/taxi/bus drivers), this one’s for you. It requires a stricter exam and a clean record. You must also hold a Non-Pro License for at least 6 months before applying.

All first-timers need to start with a Student Permit, then move on to a Non-Pro. Now, let’s go through how to get there.

Step 1: Take the Theoretical Driving Course (TDC)

Before anything else, you need to learn the rules of the road because no, “basta may preno” is not a valid driving philosophy.

his is where the Theoretical Driving Course enters. Required by the LTO, this course teaches you traffic signs, road rules, and how not to be a menace behind the wheel. It’s your ticket to applying for a Student Permit.

Now , the plot twist is, you don’t even have to leave your house.

With DriveSafe PH’s Online Theoretical Driving Course (OTDC), you can study in your pambahay, munching on chips, while mastering road signs in the comfort of your cozy home. We made it flexible, affordable, and legit (yes, LTO-accredited). Adulting is already hard as it is; why make learning to drive harder?

Once you finish the course, we’ll issue your Certificate of Completion so you can move on to the next step in your license journey. Easy, right?

Step 2: Apply for a Student Permit

Now that you’ve learned the theory, it’s time to bring your O/TDC certificate and other required documents to the LTO to apply for your Student Permit. This permit allows you to practice driving with a licensed companion.

To move forward to a Non-Pro License, you must hold your Student Permit for at least one month. For a Pro License, you must wait six months.

Step 3: Take the Practical Driving Course (PDC)

The next requirement is the 8-hour Practical Driving Course, where you’ll receive hands-on instruction from an LTO-accredited school. This is where you build real driving skills and prepare for the actual road test.

Upon completion, you’ll receive a PDC Certificate, which you’ll need to apply for a license.

Step 4: Pass the LTO Written and Practical Exams

Time to prove you’ve been paying attention.

  • The written exam has 60 questions. Get at least 48 right and you’re good. If not, don’t worry, you can try again.
  • The practical driving test checks if you can actually drive safely and not treat the road like a race track. Take it seriously, but don’t panic.

Passing both exams moves you a step closer to being fully licensed.

Step 5: Apply for Your Non-Professional Driver’s License

Once you’ve passed both the written and practical driving exams and have held your Student Permit for at least one month, you may now apply for a Non-Professional Driver’s License. This license allows you to drive private vehicles on your own.

Visit your nearest LTO branch, submit the required documents, pay the necessary fees, complete the biometric process, and voila, license secured!

Now go and take the wheel (just not literally yet). Start your driving journey with DriveSafe PH’s Online TDC—no traffic and no classroom stress. Just you, your screen, and the road to becoming a fully licensed driver.
