LTO Suspends 671 Drivers in Major Road Safety Sweep

In a decisive move to enhance road safety, the Land Transportation Office (LTO), in coordination with the Department of Transportation (DOTr), has suspended 671 driver’s licenses. This large-scale enforcement operation addresses increasing concerns about road crashes, driver negligence, and illegal drug use behind the wheel.

Key Highlights from the LTO-DOTr Press Conference

1. 671 Licenses Suspended, 90-Day Suspension Now in Effect

LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor Mendoza II confirmed the immediate suspension of licenses:

  • 547 drivers involved in road crashes that caused injuries or deaths
  • 97 drivers tested positive for illegal drug use

All are under a 90-day suspension. Non-compliance or repeat violations may result in permanent revocation.

2. License of Mark Louie Burgos Revoked

Mark Louie Burgos, a bus driver from La Union, had his license permanently revoked after a viral video showed him recklessly speeding and ignoring passenger pleas. The LTO’s swift action reflects its strong stance on penalizing dangerous drivers.

3. 1,100+ Vehicles Flagged for Failing Roadworthiness Checks

The LTO issued show cause orders to 1,165 vehicles that did not meet legal safety standards during inspection.

4. Data-Driven Road Safety Strategy

A comprehensive review of traffic accidents and road rage cases is underway to shape future enforcement and policy. The LTO aims to proactively address the root causes of road mishaps.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon reiterated the agency’s resolve:

“We are serious about cleaning up our roads. Kung delikado ka magmaneho, hindi ka dapat magmaneho.”

Bus companies and operators tied to these incidents will also face accountability, with compliance monitoring already in place.
