Are Filipino Drivers Ready for Self-Driving Cars?

Picture this: a self-driving car effortlessly maneuvering through the chaotic streets of Metro Manila or the winding roads of Baguio. It sounds like a scene from a sci-fi movie, but with today’s rapid advancements in technology, it begs the question: Are Filipino drivers ready to embrace autonomous vehicles (AVs)?

Where Are We Now?

While countries like Singapore are already testing autonomous buses and taxis, the Philippines is still playing catch-up. The country has yet to be included in global indexes like KPMG’s Autonomous Vehicles Readiness Index. This highlights the long road ahead in terms of infrastructure, technology, and policy.

Despite this, Filipino car buyers are getting a taste of automation. Brands like Geely are introducing smart features such as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance. These technologies are promising steps, but are they enough to move us closer to a self-driving future?

Why We’re Not Quite There Yet

Several hurdles make the Philippines a tough playground for self-driving cars:

1. Chaotic Roads and Infrastructure

From potholes to unpredictable traffic flow, our roads present a unique challenge. Self-driving cars rely on clear road markings, functional traffic lights, and mapped routes. Can you imagine a robot car trying to navigate a tricycle cutting through EDSA traffic?

2. Lack of Laws and Policies

There are currently no government regulations or guidelines for testing or using self-driving cars in the Philippines. While the Land Transportation Office (LTO) is making strides with stricter licensing requirements, policies around AVs are still nonexistent.

3. Trust Issues

Would you trust a computer to handle the chaos of Quiapo or Cebu during rush hour? Many Filipinos remain skeptical about the safety and reliability of this technology. The “bahala na” attitude doesn’t mesh well with precision engineering.

Can We Adapt?

Filipinos have always been resourceful and quick to adapt to new trends—just look at the way we embraced ride-hailing apps like Grab and Angkas. The same spirit could eventually pave the way for self-driving technology.

But before we get there, we need to:

  • Upgrade infrastructure to include clear signage and connected traffic systems.
  • Establishing safety standards, testing protocols, and regulations for AV use.
  • Build public confidence by teaching Filipinos how these technologies work.

5 Advanced Cars Leading the Way in 2024

Oh, by the way, here are the several vehicles offer advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) that bring us closer to autonomous driving (as of 2024).

Here are the five notable models:

1. Tesla Model S

Equipped with Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) package, the Model S provides features like highway and street navigation, automatic lane changes, and traffic light recognition. However, it requires active driver supervision.

2. Mercedes-Benz S-Class

The 2024 S-Class offers Drive Pilot, a Level 3 autonomous system allowing hands-free driving under certain conditions, such as on mapped highways at speeds below 40 mph. It’s one of the first Level 3 systems approved for use in the U.S.

3. Ford F-150

Available with Ford’s BlueCruise, this system enables hands-free driving on pre-qualified sections of divided highways, known as Hands-Free Blue Zones, covering over 130,000 miles in North America.

4. Nissan Ariya

The Ariya features ProPILOT Assist 2.0, allowing hands-off single-lane highway driving and guided lane changes with driver supervision.

5. Kia EV6
